Chances are that they know you want them; they're just ignoring you!
Recent research shows that people KNOW when they're being stared at.
In one experiment, designed by Dr. Rupert Sheldrake, people work in pairs,
one person wearing a blindfold and facing away from the other. This other
person either looks at the back of the subject's neck or looks away. In a
series of trials the sequence of looking and not looking periods is random.
In each trial, the blindfolded person has to guess whether or not he or she
is being looked at. The guess is either right or wrong; and the scores are
recorded.
"To date, over 20,000 trials have been carried out to test for the reality
of the feeling of being looked at. The results are overwhelmingly positive
and highly significant statistically... most people are sensitive to being
stared at from behind," says Dr. Sheldrake in his book, "Dogs That Know When
Their Owners Are Coming Home".
A sample population of 900 blindfolded people was divided into people whose
guesses were more often right than wrong ("right") and people who were more
often wrong than right ("wrong"). In "looking" trials, when people were
being looked at from behind, about 550 people were right, compared with
about 200 wrong, and there was less than 1 in
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 probability that this
was due to chance! In the "not looking" trials, about half the people were
right, and half were wrong.
"So the sense of being stared at works when people are in fact being stared
at", Dr. Sheldrake concludes. "In the control trials, when people are not
being looked at, they are being asked to detect an absence of an effect, and
in this very artificial situation they were just guessing, with results no
better than chance."
